Milkweed is the host plant to the Monarch, Queen, and Solider butterflies. This is one of the easier milkweeds to grow in a garden setting. The white flowers are a great nectar source for multiple butterflies and bees. Milkweed has an ecosystem within itself. Many different insects like milkweed bugs, aphids, and lady bugs also use this plant and are harmless. Cold stratification is not needed however it does increase germination success rate. The milky sap is toxic and can blind you be careful.

Aquatic milkweed is one of our few evergreen milkweed species. However because it doesn’t grow as fast as non native milkweed during the off season. It prevents a large breeding population of Monarch, Queen, and Soldiers during off season. Which is one of the main reasons for not causing butterflies to be affected by OE. Another speculation is that this milkweed has native defense mechanism that prevent a high percentage of OE on the plant.
